Continuers Swing Checklist

Below are the fundamental moves you should feel confident with for Continuers Swing. There are also 5 key elements students should be able to apply to all of their vocabulary:

  1. Having a clear pulse on each beat

  2. Making clear weight changes

  3. Making transitions between different rhythms, shapes, from closed to open, and from open to closed

  4. Connect with a partner in a way that is comfortable, functional and adapts between being in a closed position and being in an open position

  5. Having basic social dance skills; getting in time with their partner and the music, giving and receiving feedback in class (if they or their partner are feeling uncomfortable or unsafe) and having basic floorcraft skills (watching out for others, adapting to having less space, apologising and checking in with people after accidents)

To join the Continuers Swing class (at North Adelaide), students should be able to apply all of these aforementioned key elements to; Lindy Hop, 30s/40s Charleston, Shag and 20’s Charleston, while dancing the fundamental shapes and rhythms outlined below.

If you don’t like particular style, or at not comfortable with all of them, that’s okay! You are still able to join continuer classes, just have a chat with your teacher about how to go about it.

With that said, we do encourage everyone to learn all the different styles as they are not only fun, but also help you improve your overall dancing!
