About Swing Out Adelaide
School Directors (left to right): Matty Carter & Laura Stokes
Swing Out Adelaide is a swing dance school. We teach a variety of different dance styles from the swing and jazz eras:
Lindy Hop
Balboa
Collegiate Shag
Charleston
Vernacular Solo Jazz
Tap
We LOVE swing and jazz music and dance.
We want to share it, celebrate it; empowering people to move their bodies and have a laugh while they do!
Our classes are low-key, beginner-friendly, and a great laugh - if we say so ourselves.
We’ll get you out on the dance floor, grooving, moving and having a whole lot of fun.
You don’t need any experience or a partner.
You just need you!

Our story starts with Luna, who started dancing…. well, for their whole life! But they started swing dancing in 2008. Luna had been, at the time, a professional belly dancer for around 10 years and a burlesque performer. As soon as they started swing dancing, they were bitten by the bug - taking every class, travelling to learn and compete- you name it! In 2015, Swing Out Adelaide came to life! From there, the school has been a hub for all kinds of people coming together to learn and share this amazing thing we do - dance.
In July 2018 Laura and Matty took the reins. Both are previous students and then teachers of Swing Out Adelaide, giving it a very special place in their hearts. They are exceptionally passionate about the joy of the dance and inviting anyone who wishes onto the dance floor. Both have had very different dance journeys; Matty living, learning and competing in London and internationally and Laura - taking every single possible class near and far, travelling interstate, exploring solo, partnered and switching.
There have been some very large shoes to fill, but they’ve enjoyed every triple step along the way!

Swing Out Adelaide is a collection of wonderful people who are dedicated to sharing the joy of swing dancing, its rich history and cultural background, the joy of movement and excellent music (there’s just something magical when you hear a big band play) and the happiness you experience sharing it with others. We have an incredibly diverse group of people who come along, so if you’ve been waiting for years to learn how to dance, or just looking for something new, are experienced, or never stepped onto a dance floor - don’t wait. Come along and try!

Our instructors are incredibly passionate about dancing and teaching. Many started as previous students and have grown with the school. Our entire team has travelled across the country, learning from our best dancers, teachers, and international guests. Most have lived overseas, travelled, and learned from some of the world’s best! Many have competed successfully here in Australia and overseas! Most importantly, they strive to make dancing accessible to everyone who wants to learn - whether you’re just starting or interested in taking your dancing to another level.

We are committed to making dancing accessible to everyone in a safe space. There is an incredibly rich history behind Lindy Hop, and “Swing” and we consider our privilege and responsibility to share the inspiration and joy we find from the original dancers, each other and everyone we dance with.
