LEARN SWING DANCING IN JUST 6 WEEKS WHILE MEETING TONS OF NEW PEOPLE ALONG THE WAY!

Join a community of dancing enthusiasts and learn something new in our 6 week beginner course! Our beginner classes are for total newbies: you don’t need any experience at all. Or, if you have done some swing dancing in the past, it’s the perfect way to solidify your basics so you can have even more fun on the dance floor. In this course we cover the basics of one of the most popular styles of swing dancing, Balboa, as well as all the tips and tricks you need to get out on the dance floor straight away. You don’t need a partner as we rotate partners. Please note that there will still be a class on October 2nd (public holiday).

WHAT IS SWING DANCING?

Swing dancing came about in the 1930s and evolved right alongside the swinging big band music of the era. There are a few different styles of swing dancing, and we teach Lindy Hop, Balboa (both partnered) and Vernacular Jazz (solo). You can learn more about the different styles here.

I DON’T HAVE A PARTNER – IS THAT OK?

Yes! We rotate partners in class so you get a chance to dance with everyone. We find dancers who rotate partners learn much faster, plus it’s more fun! However if you’re coming with a partner and you don’t wish to rotate that’s fine, just let your teachers know at the beginning of class.

WHAT IS A FOLLOW? WHAT IS A LEAD? WHICH ONE DO I CHOOSE?

There are two roles in swing dancing: follow and lead. Both are equally important, challenging, and fun. We like to describe the roles like this: the follow is driving the car, and the lead is holding the map. The lead will tell the follow “there’s a left turn ahead” and the follow chooses how to execute that turn, or whether to turn the car at all. You can choose whichever role you like. If you still aren’t sure that’s no problem – you can sign up as “undecided” and choose when you get to class. We recommend learning both roles! But do please stick to your chosen role for the duration of the course to avoid confusion.
